Motivational speaker and attorney Kara Ferrier is the mind behind the book 28,000 Days Make Yours Count. What an intriguing title for a book! And how many years are 28,000 days exactly…let’s calculate it…Well, it’s approximately 76-77 years. Those digits are the average years a human lives…Let’s find out what the book is about and learn more regarding the author behind the tome.
Kreyolicious: Did you dream of being an author growing up?
Kara Ferrier: Not at all. I’m still getting used to the new title. Writing a book was the last thing I ever thought I would do growing up. I actually wasn’t even a big reader as a child or as a young adult. I read what I absolutely had to read, mostly for school, and that was it. I can probably count on one hand how many books I actually read, cover to cover, as a child.
Kreyolicious: What made you take up law?
Kara Ferrier: There are several reasons why I ended up taking up law. The first one was that growing up, I was always a talker and I loved to argue. People around me would always tell me that I’d make a good lawyer and I guess, subconsciously, I agreed with them. The second reason was that after my father was brutally murdered in Haiti in 1996, I experienced first-hand what a failed judicial system looks like. As of today, almost 21 years later, justice has never been served, although lack of evidence was never the issue. I wanted to have my hand in helping people get the justice my family never got. There was also that burning desire to make my father proud by making something great of myself and becoming a lawyer seemed to be a worthy achievement. Lastly, during my last semester in college, I interned on Capitol Hill, in Washington D.C., with Congressman Eliot Engel of New York and there, I met and was inspired by numerous legislators and their staff, most of whom were former practicing attorneys or had studied law prior to serving. At that point, I decided to go for it, thinking if all else failed, a Juris Doctor would be a good degree to have.
Kreyolicious: If you had to do it over, would you still do it?
Kara Ferrier: Yes I would. It was great training and conditioning for my brain and that conditioning has served me in more ways than I can even count.
Kreyolicious: Your book 28,000 Days Make it Count…came about how?
Kara Ferrier: Again, let me reiterate the fact that I had zero intention of writing a book and frankly, even when I started writing the content that is now in the book, I still was not intending to write a book. What happened was that a gentleman I met and befriended at a Starbucks a few years ago started sharing materials with me that I had never come across growing up. Books like The Science of Getting Rich, The Power of the Subconscious Mind and Bob Proctor’s Paradigm Shift series- I couldn’t believe that as educated as I thought I was, I had never come across this kind of information before. The more I read these books and the more I discovered the power and control I had over my life, the more I wanted to share this new found knowledge with the people around me; but even more so, with the youth of my beloved Haiti. I realized, as I read, that the collective mindset of lack and scarcity that has us put the word “ti” [little] in front of just about any word cannot bring abundance to Haiti. I also realized that such mindset can gradually be replaced by a more self serving mindset, one mind at a time. I’m fully aware of how ambitious and seemingly impossible this undertaking is but we have to start somewhere, right? So, I decided I was going to record myself, in Kreyol, explaining the various principles I had just learned and then I would go to Haiti and hold workshops in schools around those recordings. I soon realized that I needed to write down what I wanted to say before recording because I was finding myself editing, deleting, re-recording over and over as I was trying to pull my thoughts together in my head in English while trying to come up with the appropriate translation in Kreyol, all while recording. It was a hot mess… so I decided to write a couple of paragraphs per topic in Kreyol…except, this stuff was coming to me more powerfully in English. So I decided to write my thoughts down in English first, then I could translate everything into Kreyol then I could record and take it to Haiti. Next thing I knew, I had chapter 1, 2, 3 and so on.
Kreyolicious: How is your book tour going?
Kara Ferrier: The book tour is going great! I’ve received so much love and support from the community. The best part has been meeting men and women from different walks of life who read the book prior to coming to the signing and having them share with me how impactful and life-altering the book has been for them. It is a true honor to be used by God to have this kind of impact on another human being.
